Deconstructress Designs began in 2006 when Stephanie
Peterson began creating costumes from wedding gowns. The costumes are generally
created from existing bridal gowns and deconstructed to create a unique and one-of-a-kind wearable piece of art.
The bridal gowns are generally floor-models or vintage
wedding dresses purchased from bridal boutiques.
After much research and trial-and-error, a process of
painting the gowns was finally created out of multiple mediums and tools. This
process produces rich coloring and texture on canvases of satin, silk, organza
and tulle.
Costume inspirations include film characters, art, music,
fairies, emotions or whatever strikes the artist about a particular wedding
gown.
The process of creating each piece of costume art is a
long and painstakingly detailed. Each costume is hand-painted, more often than
not hand-sewn, and can take days to months to complete. Each gown
includes relative accessories to complete the costume such as wigs, wings,
gloves, veils, etc. These accessories are almost always created from scratch
and the wigs are often hand dyed.
My latest addition includes dresses and a dress-up trunk
for little girls. While these dresses were not made by me, they were carefully
chosen by me to include on my site.
Thank you for your interest in my work and I hope you
enjoy looking at my costume art!
